Malifaux go!

Well folks, here we are again, with a huge, disgusting pause in my blog posts.
Life has gotten the better of me once again, it seems. With my camera being the craps for the last good long while and some crazy medical problems going on, I really lost the motivation for a spell.

Now the hobby mojo seems to be creeping back into my daily routine, and I once again feel like slinging paint!
As promised in my Gen Con wrap up post, I am ready to show you some Malifaux goodies.

I now have a few games under my belt for this system and it has really been a hoot! The card mechanic in Malifaux was a bit hard to get used to at first, and I always found myself searching for dice to roll. Now that I am starting to get the hang of it however, I am enjoying the game thoroughly.

As is typical with me and miniature games, I am finding it difficult to stay "in faction" with my purchases. All of Wyrd's beautiful new plastic kits seem to be calling my name!
I have started off with Outcasts so far, which seem to be a pretty good springboard into other factions since they are, after all, Mercenaries.

My first completed fig obviously had to be the Master in my Hired Blades crew box, Viktoria of Ashes. Really an awesome fig, albeit tiny and super fiddly.  Too many times I see these Malifaux crews painted extremely dark and dirty. So, I wanted to go somewhat opposite and make mine bright, with quite a bit of pop for the table top.

Here she is in all her punkish glory. Let me know what you think!

Here is a shot of my entire crew as it stands now, I have since added Ama No Zako and Killjoy for some major nastiness. Just have to get those big buggers assembled.

As you can see, I have gone with kind of a hodgepodege brick road style for the bases. I made the bricks from scratch and plan to make a tutorial on them in the near future.

Something noteworthy about these plastic kits: While these are awesome figures, they are fairly difficult to assemble. If you are unsure of your skill assembling tiny, multi-part figures, you may want to seek out the help of a more experienced modeler. I have put together military models which make the difficulty of these pale in comparison, but I would put these up there in the top tier for difficult gaming figures.

Thanks for reading!

Infinity: Señor Massacre finished

Well, I am very happy with how this guy turned out after all. I'm a bit sad I have to give him away at the tournament, but he should go to someone that will make sure he sees far more table time than I would.
I could not get this guys head to focus in any of the pictures....How frustrating!
The checkered Kitchen style floor was a bit of a leap but I am pleased with how it worked. I had originally just assumed I would go with grey blocks as the color for the ground but realized it wasn't going to work once his pants were all finished up.
Couldn't have him all melding into one color!

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks for looking.

Infinity: Señor Massacre WIP

Been working on this guy for a week or so now. Need to have him finished by the end of this month as he'll be a a raffle drawing prize for our first local Infinity tournament.

I decided (along with the help of a friend) to challenge myself and do this guy yellow rather than copy the studio art directly. I'm sort of kicking myself now, yellow is a freaking hard color to paint well!
Even though its been a test of my patience, I'm fairly pleased with how he's shaping up now.

let me know what you think.

Memory lane: Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator

Here is one of the very first figs I finished when I first jumped into Warmachine, everybody's favorite cowardly Gobber, Reinholdt.
At that point in my painting career, I didn't see fit to ever highlight black because I always thought it made things look dusty and bland. Now its the other way around.
I remember being pretty pleased with how different my Reinholdt looked form everybody else's. Now I look at that cotton candy blue skin and cant imagine what was going through my noggin!
Ah well, he still see's use in a number of my games.

Eiryss, Angel of Retribution

Well, I got this done and only just barely before the deadline. About an hour and a half before the deadline!
Wouldn't have mattered terribly if I hadn't, but it does sort of zap the fun out of contests if nobody endeavors to finish on time.
I am pretty pleased with her. I hope the new owner will be as well. The painting went pretty smooth at first as I had  a pretty good mental image of how I wanted her to look in the end. The only part that really gave me struggles was the big feathers draped across the back of her cloak. I knew I wanted them to be somewhat eye catching since the rest of the model is painted in such nuetral, subdued colors.I wanted to steer clear of bright parrot looking feathers, because that would just look goofy in my opinion.
When I hit a snag such as this, I usually let my wife have a look and see what she thinks. Two sets of eyes and all that jazz. She asked if I thought doing bright phoenix type feathers would work, and I had a DUH! moment. Why hadn't I thought of that? I am really pleased with how they turned out. So, props to the wife unit on that one.

Infinity Malignos and Eiryss WIP

Finished up my Malignos the other night. I am very pleased with how he turned out. After a paint night with some buddies we hammered out his color scheme and I think it worked out rather well.
The colors don't quite match the rest of my Starter but with the basing and such I think it should be close enough.
Two more basic Morat vanguard to go and the starter shall finally be at an end.

I also got quite a bit more done on the Epic Eiryss fig for the Miniature exchange. Gonna have to retool the face a bit, as everyone Ive shown her to seems to think she has a mustache, Yeesh! Ah well, Easy enough fix I guess. She is in the home stretch now.

Thanks for taking a look!

Miniature Exchange

At the beginning of June a few of us here on our local gaming Forum decide to do a miniature exchange just for the heck of it.
We ended up with 12 participants, which is freaking great as I really didn't expect more than about 6!
If all goes well, the plan is to turn this into a Bi-annual event.

The rules were fairly straight forward. Each person picked a regular man sized figure (20mm-30mm base) and gave it to the person they were paired with. You then have a month to finish and get the fig back to that person.
I gave a piper of Mid-Nor to my exchange buddy.
I was handed Epic Eiryss, Angel of Retribution, which I thought was pretty cool as I have never really even seen the fig in person very often.
So, after a late start, here is my first  WIP

Eiryss Alternate Sculpt.

Painted this little chicka up as a commission, and I don't think I will ever be painting one again.
Its a freakin cool model, but just way too detail ridden to keep clean at all. Just the amount of belts on her is enough to make you want to yank your hair out (good thing I have none)

I had originally tried to do the cloak in a very pale, baby blue, but just couldn't get it looking right at all. So, brown it became. The darker hue at the bottom of her cloak is supposed to make it look wet and saturated from the melting snow.
Let me know if I pulled it off ok.

Thanks for looking.

Pirate Booty

Well, for my first post here on the new blog, I thought I'd throw up something a little bit different from my normal fare. She is the Female duelist from Reaper miniatures.  I've been working on this fig, on and off for a little while now, trying to figure out what I could use her as.
I came to the conclusion that she would make a great proxy for First mate Hawk in a Warmachine Pirates army.
So, if I ever get some Pirate Jacks and Casters, I have a solo to go with them.....

Iron Kingdoms: Alexia

Painted this up as a quick commission for the local Pressganger. I wasn't too terribly impressed with this fig upon first inspection but I have come to like it quite a bit now.  I had planned to do some sort of Epic base for her, but while I was trying to snap the tab off, her feet started to break at the ankles. So, here is what we get after that debacle.

I may have to pick one of these up for myself. I think it has a lot more character than the boxed one that comes with the Risen.

Memory lane: Boomhowler & Trollkin Mercs

Well, posting up my Ironbreakers the other day gave me an Idea for some blog content. I have oodles of painted miniatures that have never been shown to anyone other than just a few close friends and gaming buddies. So, I thought I'd post once or twice a month showcasing my older figs (rough as they may be)

First in line could only be Boomhowler and his Trollkin Mercs. Besides Eiryss, these were the first Mercs I picked up for Warmachine, and some of my very first attempts at freehand with those Tartans.
These guys were finished almost exactly 5 years ago to date.( I paint the month and year on the bottom of figs I finish)

Alexia.

After having her half way done for a very long time, I decided to finish up Alexia once and for all. I struggled with her sword and Im not happy at all with how it turned out. I may have to go back and re visit it some time. The Witchfire blade deserves a spectacular paint job after all.
And, heres a shot with Alexia and the Risen I have finished for her up to this point. Hopefully I'll get the motivation to finish the rest and a few Warrior thralls someday.
